The food is easy. A simple cook out is the obvious choice, with hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill. If you want to get a bit fancier, opt for tri-tip and chicken. Yum!
Choosing the entertainment for your guests can be a bit more challenging, especially if children will be at the party, but don't worry, as there are many fun 4th of July party games that are suitable for people of all ages.
One party game that takes advantage of the warm weather is the old favorite, Pass the Water Balloon. Before you begin, fill up a batch of water balloons with cold water.
When you're ready to play this game, round-up your guests who won't mind getting wet and have them form a circle. To start the game, place a water balloon under the neck of one person. The goal of the game is for that person to pass the balloon to the person beside him or her without using their hands, and so on, around the circle it goes.
Of course, some balloons are bound to break, but that's part of the fun! When a balloon breaks, the person who it was being passed to is out. Start the play again with a new balloon, picking up where you left off. The last person who remains is the winner.
Other fun water games include bobbing for apples, or, if you have a pool, diving for "treasures" like plastic pearls or small prizes.
If your guests don't want to get wet, there are many other games which can be played indoors, in air-conditioned comfort. All the standard board games work fine, just try to avoid games that may be too competitive, or can only be played by a few people at a time. Some other fun 4th of July party games for the indoor set include darts, chess, checkers, and charades.
This day wouldn't be complete without some kind of fireworks. Both young and old could do sparklers. Little ones, of course, would need constant supervision. Older children would certainly enjoy setting off some of the ground popper type fireworks.
You can also invite each of your guests to bring a batch of fireworks and pool them all together to create one big display for the party.
When the sun goes down and your party guests are waiting for the evening's fireworks to begin, you might consider playing a classic 4th of July party game, Tag-In-The-Dark. For this game, you will want a group of about eight people, a large back yard or other open space, and some party glow sticks, flashlights or sparklers. This game is just like regular tag, but with the added fun of hide and seek, because the evening darkness makes it a little bit harder to find your friends.
