Have you ever noticed that silver or gold ink wears away more quickly than conventional colours when printed on promotional pens? This is a problem the screen printing industry has had with metallic inks for as long as printing itself has been in existence. Whereas ink technology has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years metallic inks still retain the problems of the past.

What is the fundamental problem that precludes a satisfactory solution to this perpetual conundrum where metallic inks are concerned when printed on promotional pens? Well, it is partly the ink itself and partly the fact that printed pens are used in, believe it or not, a hostile environment. Metallic inks, like all screen printing inks are made up of three fundamental ingredients, pigment, solvent and resin. Pigment gives the ink colour, solvent dissolves the resin and allows the ink to flow and the resin provides the adhesion. In the case of silver ink the pigment is aluminium powder and gold pigment is brass powder. Neither of these pigments have great resistance to saline solution and tarnish very easily when exposed to it.
